Ms. Mary Jossell’s fourth grade class at Maya Angelou Elementary School worked together to maintain and grow their “Scientific Garden.” In March, all of their plants were grown from seeds in the classroom. Each student journaled daily with observations of growth and necessary care for the variety of plants. Once the weather permitted, plants were transferred outside in a designated lot for transitioning and completing their next growth cycle.
During the final days of school, students were encouraged to take plants home and continue the process of transitioning their plants to harvest. Ms. Jossell reminds her students to remember the 3RRRs: Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle!
“School is the place to bee!” As a way to increase student attendance, Maya Angelou Elementary School held an attendance motto contest among students. Congratulations to third grade student Brooklyn as she was announced the winner for her motto and design!
Her design was placed on t-shirts and sold for only $5, thanks to District 152 Educational Foundation funding. As a reward for all students, they were encouraged to wear their shirts in place of their uniforms. And students who earned “perfect or good attendance” (missing 0-5 days of school), were awarded with lunch from McDonald’s!
Before the last day of school, Maya Angelou Elementary School students wrote thank you notes to their teachers! Kindergarten students were grateful for the assistance of the fifth grade students in preparing their notes.
Our staff members ended the school year with a memorable End of Year Celebration! Congratulations to all of our employees on a job well done. Similarly to our students, staff members who had perfect attendance were presented with an award! Also, each building selected an Angel Award recipient who was an outstanding staff member throughout the year!
As the school year came to a close, Maya Angelou Elementary School’s 4th and 5th grade teams worked together to analyze data and celebrate great growth in the students during the school year!
And that’s a wrap . . . the last day of school is here! Thank you to all of our students, families and staff who have made this year a success. We wish everyone a safe and happy summer!
In observance of Memorial Day, Harvey School District 152 will be closed on Monday, May 29.
As a reminder, tomorrow is an early dismissal day. Students will be released at 12:30 p.m.
Author Tracy Watland visited Mrs. Kowalski’s kindergarten class at Maya Angelou Elementary School! Ms. Watland’s book, “Abby’s Magic Music,” teaches children about forgiveness. The students loved listening to the story, “playing” the guitar, and taking home butterfly magnets.

Since 2016, the Joliet Area/South Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (JASSAC) has partnered with Blessings in a Backpack to provide snack bags to Harvey School District 152 students. This year, Shure Music Company purchased 3,000 bags and donated them back to Blessings in a Backpack. In April, JASSAC packed the bags and delivered them to the district.
More than 3,000 students from the district were thrilled to be recipients of Blessings in a Backpack this spring, thanks to JASSAC! Additionally, 600 bags are distributed to District 152 students each month.
We greatly appreciate the kindness shown by members of the Joliet Area/South Suburban Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for providing these essentials for our students. And many thanks to Ms. Casey Nesbit, current school board member, who is also a member of JASSAC.

These wonderful members of our community will be featured at board meetings, given a certificate, and celebrated on our social media channels and website.
For April 2023, we were honored to celebrate full time substitute teacher Quentin Wright. Mr. Wright was recently recognized by his Alma Mater Grand Canyon University College of Education as a Teacher of the Year.
In addition to being a celebrated member of the Harvey 152 family, Mr. Wright is also a celebrated Professional DJ, Writer and Poet. Students love being able to interact with Mr. Wright and his passion for music, writing, and education.
The recognition from his alma mater is absolutely something to be proud of and we are thrilled to be able join in the celebration by naming him Someone You Should Know!
